Farm Update

Greetings Friends!

We're excited that the official start of the Mineral Farmer's Market is near and look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025. Meanwhile, here's an update on the happenings at Friendly Feathers Farm....

THE GOATS

The goats-

The does are doing well. They've had two years off from kidding, however, this fall we'll be breeding them. So, little hooves should be hitting the ground come spring 2026! Have you ever wanted to own a goat but have to be bothered with the day to day care? You can! Contact us and find out how!

The bucks are finally out of rut, thank goodness! I can only take so much of seeing them blubber at each other, pee on each other and themselves!

Mooney, one of our wethers (a neutered male goat) is having a skin issue. He's the only one with the problem. We've consulted our large animal vet and she's on the case!

THE GARDEN

The garden is in it's early stages, so the warm weather crops are young and small. The cool weather crops (radish, spinach and kale ) are ready to eat. And I'm pleased with how to potatoes are coming along.

We're really focused on tomatoes this year and will have 14 varieties of seedlings to offer at market! Check them out here.

THE CHICKENS

Our mature hens are doing well and laying fresh eggs daily. They're at their peak this time of year. I'm on a mission to add even more interest to our egg basket. It will involve obtaining hatching eggs from various sources to incubate, but the resulting hens should lay some pretty spectacular eggs!

The coop expansion is coming along well. Stephen has the door in. Next comes the siding and a few finishing touches. We love incorporating the old with the new. So it's not uncommon to see vintage reclaimed items such as hinges, doors and windows on most of our outbuildings.

Some of you may know, we've added to the flock by purchasing some mail order chicks. They're nine weeks old as of this posting and already behaving like “big girls” by getting on the roosts at night. If we're lucky we might get some eggs from them before the day light hours shorten. We ordered Welsummers an French Black Copper Marans. These two breeds will be contributors to the added variety in egg colors we offer.

THE KITCHEN

The sourdough starter has come out of its winter hibernation and bread is back! Look for it in The Box on May 3rd.
